Warmachine & Hordes is a wargame made by Privateer Press. Players form armies centred around a powerful and focused warcaster or a fearsome and furious warlock, wielding magic and controlling beasts of steel and flesh in their efforts to gain control of the Iron Kingdoms and the world of Immoren as a whole! We have some great content producers here, in all types of media, from some of the best players in the world. Enjoy!

Baffo’s sculpting table 04 – Scaly skins

Posted by on 11:53 am

It has been a while since my last ‘Sculpting table’. I was planning something smaller for this article, but two weeks ago I got to work on a quick (ish) commission for my local Skorne player and it seemed good material for a wider range of conversions: scaly skin/armor patterns. The commission was to beef up a full unit of Cataphract catrati with cloaks (since the owner doesn’t like the fiddly spikes of the original models). Not to leave the cloaks empty we decided to add raw scaly hides from powerful beasts the individual warriors slayed during the armies desert crossing (let say it is a prerequisite to join this elite veteran unit…). Since we might do a similar conversion on the Arcuarii and/or Incendiarii we also decided to leave furry hides for the harpoon throwers and theme the trophies of this unit on scaly/more armored ‘beasts’. I made an effort to split up the process in comprehensive (I hope) steps and ‘recipes’, so don’t be afraid to try some of these out (you can practice on a piece of plastic card if you don’t want to risk models until you get the hang of it…). I should point out that this type of conversion (cloaks and scaly skin) were my very first experiments in green stuffing more than 15 years ago and helped me build up confidence and tool control, so it might help you as well;)   Tools of the trade Many of the patterns presented below rely on the shape and size of the sculpting tool you are using, so I guess I should first explain in some more detail what I use for my sculpting… I do own a full 20 piece set of metal sculpting tools, a few silicon tipped color/clay shapers and an assorted bunch of improvised tools, but I still use most the base GW sculpting tool I got when I first started. However if you want small and specific details that you can consistently reproduce in a pattern you need to make your own ‘ghetto’ custom tools. I carved mine all out of the remaining frames of GW plastic kits. These are basically miniaturized sculpting tools you make to imprint specific shapes in the modeling putty. The custom tools I used for these conversions are the following:   Making the cloaks Another ‘custom tool’ is what I call the Green stuff press. It is basically just two squares of thick smooth plastic card, one of which has a 1mm raised border on all 4 edges to make evenly thick sheets of putty (I mentioned it in the MoW coats article). You just have to lubricate the surface of the ‘GS press’, so that the putty doesn’t stick to it, initially flatten it with your thumb and then sandwich it between the 2 squares of plastic card. That will give you a round shaped sheet of green stuff that you can cut in the shape you need for your cloak/coat/banner using the ‘knife tip’ from your metal sculpting tool. Once you’re happy with the shape very carefully lift the sheet up without ripping or stretching it and attach it to your model with some super glue (preferably use gel glue since it is easier to control) and while it is still...

Toruk to Tyrant – 2012 Year in Review

Posted by on 12:44 pm

Toruk to Tyrant – Year in Review   Overview 2012 was a fun year for me playing Skorne.   I managed to play an amazing amount of games during the year and managed to not fail too badly.   At the tale end of the year I did get a bit burned out by them, but that was my fault for not taking a bit of a mid year break like I have been doing over the past couple years. I really look forward to the future and more time with Skorne. I believe the next Hordes book is going to have some different option for skorne players. As long as I feel I can bring a variety of models I will always enjoy the faction.   Random stats I played 87 tournament games and 87 friendly games. (odd that it came out so even) I won 69% of my tournament games. Won Highest % of games with Rasheth in Tournaments.  83% win ratio (losses only came at tale end of the year when I tried some out of theme force lists) Played Zaal  most in tournaments – 37 tournament games and won 73% of my games. Most games played was with Zaal – 65 games, Rasheth came in 2nd with 27 games.   Achievements of 2012 I did manage to win a hardcore event at Diecon in 2012 with Zaal. I was very excited about that. I also won 3 local events using a variety of Skorne warlocks .   I did not attend/play in nearly as many “big con” events as 2011, but I still managed to have a ton of fun and play a lot of games.   I did a decent job in the first half of the year playing a variety of warlocks, and in the second half the year I played mostly Rasheth and Zaal.   I did a good job of keeping my army full painted during the entire year as well.   Complete Stats   Casters Total Games Total friendly Games Friendly Game Win Total Tournament Games Tournament game WIN Win % Friendly Game Win % Tournament Games Overall Average Dominar Rasheth 27 15 10 12 10 66.67% 83.33% 74.07% Lord Tyrant Hexeris 4 3 3 1 0 100.00% 0.00% 75.00% Lord Arbiter Hexeris 6 3 3 3 2 100.00% 66.67% 83.33% Archdomina Makeda 2 2 2 0 0 100.00% 0 100.00% Supreme Archdomina Makeda 20 8 6 12 8 75.00% 66.67% 70.00% Master tormentor Morghoul 24 10 8 14 7 80.00% 50.00% 62.50% Lord Assassin Morghoul 7 5 1 2 2 20.00% 100.00% 42.86% Master Ascetic Naaresh 1 1 1 0 0 100.00% 0 100.00% Supreme Aptimus Zaal 65 28 18 37 27 64.29% 72.97% 69.23% Tyrant Xerxis 8 5 3 3 2 60.00% 66.67% 62.50% Void Seer Mordikaar 10 7 3 3 2 42.86% 66.67% 50.00%                   Total 174 87 58 87 60 66.67% 68.97% 67.82%   The future For 2013 I plan on returning to Cryx for a majority of the year, but I will take some breaks every few months to bring out my skorne. I’m excited for the upcoming book, and some of the new models that are coming out. I hope that Makeda3 will be fun to play.   I don’t think I’ll post...
