Baffo’s Red Army of DOOM 02 – Doom Rager

Posted by on 5:50 am

I can be rather impatient sometimes, which might sound weird considering I spend several hours per grunt slowly adding layer upon layer of modeling putty on models that would be perfectly serviceable as they come out of the factory, but when it comes to waiting several months (or even years) for models to be officially released, my patience runs out pretty fast. We (as in Khador players) have yet to see a release date for the Grolar from the second-to-last Warmachine expansion, PP has an alarming backlog of jack kits and other models from the last three Wm/H anthologies to produce and we’re less than a month away from the next Hordes book, so I am guessing we won’t be getting most of the jacks from Reckoning before summer 2016… Since I prefer the weight of metal jacks on the table and still have a couple of un-assembled classic Berserkers hoarded away in my bits boxes, I decided (like several other Khador players) to convert my own Rager, rather than waiting for the plastic model release sometime in the unforeseeable future. For this project I used the concept art of the Rager’s entry in Reckoning as my main guideline (since it is the only image we have so far of the un-released new jack); there we can see the Rager has as expected the exact same body as the older Berserker (even the same annoying running pose), with a smaller gladius, a different head and a shield-cannon, reminiscent of MoW Shocktroopers. The most prominent feature (most recognizable at a glance) seems to be the large shield on the model, so I decided to invest the most effort in making my own shield as ‘faithful’ to the concept art as I could, while I took a bit of ‘artistic licence’ for the other bits… Head and body: Let us start with the head; in the picture above you can see the steps I took: first I sculpted the face plate (under the ‘eye slit’), imitating the design shown in the concept art (the number and disposition of holes and the emboldened edge of the mask), then I added the upper half of the head, but since it still looked too low I added another layer of green stuff to it to round it out. With the added layers of putty the head ended up being 20% bigger than the original, but since the ‘zerker’s fists are so massive, my head does not feel quite as out of scale (if you did the same on a Retribution jack, it would look wrong, since their hands are much smaller and a larger head in comparison would be much more jarring).Next I reposed the lower body, so that instead of running, it looked like it was leaning on a rock with its right foot. For that you don’t need to cut any legs, just glue on the base something the model can stand on and pin the lower body to the base trough the left foot into the ankle (since that foot comes separate from the rest). Now, if we just attached the upper body to the legs in this position, our model would be tilted backward looking up, like if it was roaring to the sky, which would work well for a Berserker...

Baffo’s Red Army of DOOM 01 – Butcher Unleashed

Posted by on 7:38 am

Today we start a new hobby article series returning to my ‘first love’ in Warmachine: Khador! As long time followers of my hobby blogs already know, I have somewhat of a fetish for Doom Reavers and their cursed swords, to the point that I transferred their aesthetic over to my Circle models (If you want to know more on that subject, check out my past series: Circle of Doom 04). Predictably, when I shared my method for sculpting custom Orgoth weapons (see Circle of Doom 02 for the full tutorial), several fans commented that if they could, they would put ‘Fell blades’ on everything; obviously that was exactly what I had in mind myself… The heavy jack/beast sized Fell blades I started with were just the first step in the ‘training montage’ I have been going through for the past six months, in order to ‘level up’ the sculpting skills required for the task… By the time of writing this article, I’ve sculpted more than 20 different, incrementally smaller/thinner Fell blades over roughly 120 man-hours of hobby time and I finally feel confident enough to move my ‘Doomsday plan’ to the next phase: assemble the ‘RED ARMY OF DOOM!!!’ I plan to convert almost every Khadoran melee specialized model/unit into my characteristic Orgoth theme (meaning custom ‘screaming souls’ blades, reaver masks and lots of skulls and trophies for everyone!!!). My ‘fluffy justification’ is: now that Zerkova has become a personal adviser to the empress, she is much more likely to get approval to expand the production of cursed blades and conduct a number of ethically questionable ‘experiments’, like giving Orgoth weapons to a much greater array of troops (Man-o-Wars, Iron Fangs, Manhunters and so on) and even a few Warcasters. The epitome of martial prowess and excessive violence in Khador has to be Orsus Zoktavir and his most impressive version (visually speaking) is Butcher3, so let us start this series with his (and his pet Argus mastiffs) conversion… Wargus Mastiffs: If you remember the reveal of Circle’s Argus Moonhounds, most of the Khador community seemed to agree the Mastiff look fits in with the Wardog aesthetic much better than the stock models, so I decided, like many others at the time, to use the Moonhounds to convert Orsus’ puppies:I started by using a hobby saw to neatly remove the stock heads from the Argi’s bodies (if you haven’t assembled the models, the Argus models come with one head molded with the body and the second head separate) and to remove the peg and separate the heads of the 2 Moonhounds I ordered for the project (these come with the Mastiff heads attached at the neck, where they slot into the standard Argus plastic body). I did not use the plastic heads joined as they come, because I wanted to have the liberty of posing the heads on my 2 doggies differently and also because the armor I was planning required me to sculpt it on their necks separately.Next I used some PP aluminum putty to fill out the socket where the second head of the stock Argus models would go in and get a flat even area to pin in my new heads, while adding some minor details like leather straps around it. When the putty hardened I pinned...

No podcast this week as we where pretty busy doing our initial run through for the WTC.   Clint and Mahu converged on Miniduels in Orlando FL, and set up the equipment, we had Carter and Pirate Captain on Commentary, and two teams of 5 playing a game with the same format as the WTC. Special thanks to all that supported this set up: ETC members Troy Tran, Mike Ortlieb, and Ian Andrews Players who drove close to 2 hours from St. Pete to help us out. Brandon Andrews, Ryan McDermott, Nick Herting, Daniel Shotland, Jeffy Mike Feulner, Greg Salapack, and Travis Armstrong, who without their help this would not have happened. Our music director Rob Harvey, our graphics director Keith Alexander, the WTC, the support we recieved from Muse on Minis and Chain Attack. And a special thank you to everyone who donated to the fundraiser to make this a reality. We will be releasing a podcast or two before the WTC, but next stop Ireland. Klaw Goes WTC: The Top 10 Teams Identified

Posted by on 10:30 am

It’s a sunny Friday afternoon, I’m mucho interested in doing things that aren’t work. I spy a certain Rickard on my Facebook chat, and strike up a conversation on which teams we think will go 5-1 at the coming WTC. I nominate them, Rickard gets in a yay or a nay. We come up with the following list: USA Stars, USA Stripes, Australia Wombat, Scotland Irn, Sweden Nobel and Germany Dichter Denker. It was a fun conversation, cut short because Rickard had to run off to a meeting (some people seem to actually do work at work). It left me slightly wanting, so I spied my Facebook chat for more people to talk to. So, whenever you need him for something that isn’t Win Condition, there is Birry Cruickshanks. We came up with the following list: Platypus, Stars, Bridesmaids1, Irn, Nobel, and the German Poets Society. Dichter Denker is not a good team name, the Poets Society is better. Since this process didn’t take very long (and I still needed to be entertained for a while longer), I asked Billy for a dark horse pick, a surprise, a team tho watch out for, that would outdo themselves. He came up with the Denmark team that has Mikkel. Going over the lists, I didn’t see a Mikkel, but since there was an unnamed “Khador Player” in Denmark Red that just might be him, we just went with that. So, this slowly turned into a thing. No list of predictions about the WTC is complete without the opinion of the Doctor, so … – Norberto! Can you tell me which teams you think will go 5-1 or better at the WTC? – … [something something I haven’t looked closely enough yet] – Please Norbert! I won’t tell anyone, I swearz! Pretty please? Sugar on top? Free beer? – [Silence] Conclusion, our venerable head judge will not be coerced into expressing any preferences or predictions. One can only respect that. Continuing my little survey, I found an Eoin Brennan in my Facebook chat. He came up with the following list: Stripes, Stars, Bridesmaids, Irn, Nobel, and Poland Grunts. His surprise pick was team UN, his reasoning being that there were many more candidates for that team than for, say, Team Belgium Brown, and that some very strong players were turned down in favour of, hopefully, better candidates. Looking over their lineup, one can certainly say that they aren’t pulling any punches, list-wise. Since at least one person mentioned the German Poets Society, I decided to ask their opinion too. A certain Sascha Maisel worked2 himself into the favour of He-Who-Has-Great-Hair3, and Sascha is online quite a lot more often, too. Stars, Bridesmaids, Irn and Nobel made the cut easily, and Sascha felt that this year, his team would break the x-2 barrier and go 5-1 as well. Left with England Lions to round it off, one can’t go wrong with Jamie Perkins and Paul North. His surprise pick is Italy Michaelangelo, because reasons. The sun was setting on that beautiful part of the world they call Convictland, so I made sure to inquire there too before they all went to bed. Local favourite and pretty boy James “Moops” Moorhouse came up with the following lineup: Platypus, Lions, Stars, Irn, Nobel, and the German Poets...
