Toruk To Tyrant – March Recap

by Brian Giese

Another month has gone by and my year of playing Skorne is continuing to go very well.  I am now the point that I feel very comfortable with many of my core models while still enjoying experimenting with list design. I will soon need to focus a bit more on specific lists over constant experimenting.  This update I will discuss a few topics including two tournaments I attended,  march results, some Deathclock practice, and Adepitcon which is only a few weeks away and the new Venator Slinger unit.  One of my biggest concerns  at this time is that I have not had enough practice against cryx though.   Luckily I know the Cryx faction very well, but I would a chance to play more games against them.

March Game Results

I played 17 games in March, 7 of which were in tournaments.    I managed to win 76% of my games and I did win 1 of 2 tournaments I entered.  I was hoping to go to a 3rd event, but life always finds a way to get in the way.  In many ways 17 games in one month is a slow month for me.   By this time last year I believe I somehow managed to play in almost 10 events. This year I’ve only played in 4 or 5.

  • Lord Assassin Morghoul 2 games (both in a tournament)
  • Dominar Rasheth  2 games (1 in tournaments)
  • Lord Arbiter Hexeris 1 game
  • Supreme Aptimus Zaal 5 games (1 in tournaments)
  • Void Seer Mordikaar 1 game
  • Supreme Archdomina Makeda 3 games (all tournament games)
  • Master Tormenter Morghoul 3 games (all small games)

Tournament Results

In March I was able to attend 2 tournaments. One in Milwaukee WI and one in Madison WI. Both were 50pt Events.

The 50pt Milwaukee Event I used a Lord Assassin Morghoul and Dominar Rasheth list. The event went 3 rounds. This event had 10 players. I did manage to win this event.

T4 Dominar Rasheth
Dominar Rasheth +5 points
* Bronzeback Titan 9 points
* Titan Gladiator 7 points
* Titan Sentry 8 points

2x Agonizer 2 points each
Farrow Slaughterhousers 6 points
5 Gatorman Posse 9 points
6 Nihilators 5 points
6 Paingiver Beast Handlers 3 points
2x Paingiver Task Master 2 points each
I really love this list. I’ve played it a few times now, and it has always preformed very well for me.
Lord Assassin Morghoul +6 points
* Archidon 7 points
* BronzBack Titan 10 points
* Titan Gladiator 8 points
* Aptimus Marketh 3 points

10 Nihilators 8 points
4 Paingiver Beast Handlers 2 points
Tyrant Commander & Standard Bearer 3 points
Tyrant Rhadeim 5 points

Bloodrunner Master Tormentor 2pts

Round 1
E Morghoul vs Lord Carver (Against Fool from Milwaukee).     This was a very fast game. Fool is a good player, but was not very aware of E Morghoul.  I went first, and ran my army on T1, he ran his army forward on T2.  He had Lord Carver within charge range of E Morghoul. I had to spend part of my turn clearing the charge lane with my troops, and charged his caster and killed him.
Round 2
E Morghoul vs Dominio  –  (rydiafan from madison) This game went 3 rounds, but my opponent had his caster get to close, and cleared a charge lane and killed caster on Top of Turn 3.
Round 3

Rasheth vs Zaal (IL player)
This was a brutal game that I won with only  5 to 8 seconds left in the round.    This was a grind game.  Scenario was Demolition. My opponent managed to get up 2 CP to 0 CP.  We both had a lot of moments, where we simply couldnt kill each other models.  Our ability to roll a good damage roll was stalled for a good full 2 rounds. Late game I was able to start clearing out models and my first caster kill run failed and left Zaal with only a few HP left. Luckily I had just enough models in the zone to keep him from getting to 3 CP and on my final turn. (which I started with only 15 seconds left in the round) activated the beast next to zaal, and was able to drop kill him to win the round and event.

Event #2

The 50pt Madison event I used Aptimus Zaal and Supreme Archdomina Makeda. This event went 4 rounds. This event had 20 players. This was a rough day for me.  I went 2-2 (In reality I should have went 1-3, but my 2nd win came because my opponent rolled terrible and rushed his turn when he went to kill my caster and forget to move a couple of models first.

I managed to fail at every aspect of the game during this event.    Highlights of faliures include, but not limited to:

  •  Poor List design -(I was testing out hybrid lists of both casters,  needless to say those lists were deleted from ibodger the same day)
  •  I managed to play one game where I kept screwing up order of activation,( Simple newb mistakes like charging with a beast before enraging it.  Skorne 101 basic fail)
  • I managed to clutter my own charge ranges (no I didn’t want to charge and kill their caster) .
  • I managed to even screw up deployment once(Molik Karn started a game 11 inches away from E makeda?? WTF – at least this was the last round of the game, and I was just too tired to care at this point)
  • I even had 1 game of bad dice(rolling over a 7 on 3 dice is just overrated anyway)  (honestly I was playing so poorly, the bad dice just helped my game get over sooner)

Round 1 was against Minions (fool from PP forums) this was a repeat of the first round matchup for 2 weeks earlier. This time I choose Zaal to take on Lord Carver. Playing against fool is always fun, because he is a good guy. He managed to get up a CP early game, and forced me to play a bit more aggressive than I wanted, and I lost my caster about a minute before dice down.
Round 2 was against Menoth (harby list) I used my E makeda list, and he didn’t have enough resources safe to keep Harby safe from Molik Karn. Very standard Karn bullet victory.
Round 3 was against P Butcher – I won this game because I snuck out a control point late game, even though my army was being utterly crushed by his list, and he had to change-up his play style late and failed to kill my caster because of a combination of bad dice luck and forgetting to move a couple of models.
Round 4was against Harkevick – My inability to deploy my army correctly and good play the kahdor player really tore my army to pieces fast and brutally. I really never found my rhythm this game and lost fairly easily.  I was honestly exhausted and not all in the right mental mind set for this last game. I played a local play who is very good with khador, and I wish I wouldnt have been as braindead as I was)

Plans for April and Adepticon

In April I will attending 2 events for sure. a 35pt Highlander event early in the month, and Adepticon in Chicago.   For the Highlander Event, I will probably play Master Tormentor Morghoul.

For Adepticon I have a lot of events to plan for.

I am signed up for every event, but I hope to play in the following events

  • 25-point AdeptiCon Kick-off Tournament
  • 50-Point Hardcore! Tournament
  • 25-Point Mangled Metal/Tooth and Claw Tournament
  • 50-Point Open Masters Tournament
  • 25-Point Stranded Forces Tournament (I am a maybe for this)
  • 50-Point Team Event Tournament (Partner is PG_Rydiafan)

I have been trying to primarily play the same 4 or 5 casters the first part of year for this event. Hopefully that allow me to play some good games over the weekend. Being the first big event of the year, will be an interesting challenge for me. I havent faced off against some of the more common Big con casters, which makes me a little nervous. For the smaller point games, I will focus on Master Tormenter Morghoul and Supreme Archdomina Makeda. Every game I play with Morghoul is fun, and I want to be able to start off the weekend with a caster I just have fun playing with, but is also good. I am honestly not a huge fan of smaller game, but at big con events, you typically will end up playing in one or two smaller events.  If I do the 25 theme force event it will be Rasheth and Zaal.

Hardcore is an entirely different beast. 37 minute deathclock is going to be a challenge. I want to use Lord Assassin Morghoul, but I have not been getting enough practice with him.  I am going to do some Hardcore Deathclock practice over this coming weekend, but I am leaning towards playing Zaal in hardcore now(I’ve played more with Zaal than anyone else).

I believe Rasheth and Master Tormentor Morghoul are both valid choices as well ( I ran fairly small lists with both). So at this point I have it narrowed down to really 1 of those 4 casters.

For the Open masters I am going to probably use Mordikaar, Zaal and Rasheth T4. The challenge is this event is 3 lists, and I can only use each list twice. I find Aptimus Marketh be such an important model for many casters, that I had to find 2 warlocks I was ok not using him with.

The team event information wont be spoiled until the event. My team member and I feel we have a sweet combo and I dont want to  ruin the suprise. – spoiler alert – It’s not that original.

Venator Slingers

I really have grown to like this unit. I bought them the day they came out, and I had the unit fully painted by the following Monday.      I have always liked putting a few more infantry models on the table then your average skorne player. This probably comes from also playing Cryx.

I really feel for costing 4/6 this unit is useful in many lists. Currently I have them with my Zaal and Mordikaar lists. Either of these lists I would use against Cryx, so I already feel the slingers add value. They do have horrid stats, but I do like the range 10 of their slings. With a Tyrant Commander I can walk 8 inches and throw 10 more. Against low Def cryx and arcing fire, goodbye bile thralls. Even if they dont kill all the biles and end up dying, With zaal/mordikaar I’m ok with that as well. They are either helping my feat, or helping my hollow spell gather souls.

Sometimes I will walk the first couple forward and get close to high def models and hit them in the back with another model. They are cheap enough, that I am willing to trade them to get rid of some of the crazy high dangerous models in the game. Players have to be careful with any non-living models around them, because with the bonus die on damage, they could spike some serious damage to many models. I plan on making some interesting ranged theme lists, once the cyclops raider is released, and these models will be included in those lists as well. They also could soften up SR objective markers as well.. Sure they are -10 to damage, but they should average 1 damage per hit, and even 1 or 2 good rules will make it easier for something else to finish off the model.

I have played Warmachine since 2004. Before that I have played warhammer fantasy for ten years, but I stopped playing Fantasy shortly after starting warmachine. I enjoy every aspect of the hobby. I love competive play, as well as just playing fun goofy lists on casual game night at our local game store. I also spent a good chunk of my free time working on making terrain for our events our local gamestores. I mainly play Skorne and Cryx, but I do own a small gatorman minion force that I have fun playing. Brian "carnage4u" Giese
