Playing the Best – Mayhem Lists and STORMWALL!


Welcome back for another article, This one is going to be pretty dry, but there is a lot of information here. I’m going to go through all the choices in my lists, why they were chosen and what I think would be reasonable replacements in general, or in a different meta.
This one got delayed a little. Entirely the fault of the Dread Lord Diablo and his minions.

I chose Major Victoria Haley (epic), and Lt. Allister Caine (prime).

I believe that you need at least one list to be very focused on a specific type of scenario.
Take and Hold. Nearly every scenario has a zone, and most aren’t that difficult to score currently. Being able to clear zones is very important, as is being able to get to them, and get a strong footing early in the game. This is most easily accomplished with a “jam” style list. involving a lot of troops that are capable of fighting it out.

There are two ways to “Jam”, Get there first and overwhelm or put immovable objects in the zone giving your army a chance to work their way into position.

I choose Haley as my support caster in a Jam list. She simply has the tools :D.
Deceleration – it makes your stuff get there, what more could you want from a spell?
Dead Eye – This is just an awesome spell. Lets your Gun Mages easily shoot down those pesky high defense models :D.
Telekenesis – What doesn’t this spell do? it’s a to-hit buff, frees up your models, prevents charges, clears charge lanes, increases threat range.
Time bomb – once you have jammed you infantry into a zone, time bomb their models and prevent them from charging and often times getting anything done at all! Also you can just use it to kill stuff 😀 it’s a pow 14 AoE 4.

The lists – Haley
Centurion [Bonded] – Centurion has one major problem, Speed. Haley gives him all the tools he could ever want. While being able to be greedy with her focus. PS 18 spear, reach, and ragman makes him into a heavy wrecking machine. His Polarity shield action also allows him to just edge into a zone and ignore enemy infantry while meagerly flail at his scratch resistant armor. This also prevents him from being slammed, very powerful in scenarios like bunker.

Thorn – Affinity haley – can channel while engaged. I don’t think I can explain exactly how amazing this is. If you haven’t run thorn with Haley2, I suggest you just try it, he’s amazing. Also he stabs pretty well with MAT 7 and a PS 13 spear.

Arcane Tempest Gun Mages + UA – I’ll keep this short, we all know they are great. 14” truesight for killing solos/stealth units. a Push shot for clearing zones, and crit brutal for the rest of the time, when a little extra damage doesn’t hurt.

Greygore Boomhowler and Co. – This is a Jam list, and these guys are among the best units in the game for jamming. They are Speed 6, Medium bases, with 4+ tough. Offensively they have pretty meager stats, but Dead Eye turns their Blunderbus’ into a legitimate threat.
For the same 9 points, Stormguard are a viable option, but with the amount of hordes I wanted some trample protection. Also I feel like I’d be wasting at least some of the power of Dead eye, by bringing a unit with only one gun, so I went with the Boomhowlers.

Horgenhold Forgeguard – I discovered Ragman+forgeguard a few months back. I really wanted to be able to win a longer attrition game against a list with multiple heavy warjacks. power 11 weaponmasters with dark shroud can kill heavies. These guys can attack over Boomhowlers due to reach or run as a front line against shooting armies. Arcane Shield + Deceleration puts them at a neigh-unkillable 12/23 stat line against guns. Deploying these guys correctly is one of the most important skills to learn while playing this list, they are speed 4, not exactly great for re-positioning if you misdeploy them.

For the same 10 points, you can run precursor Knights with the UA, this provides more magical weapons and Blessed, but only 1 turn of weaponmaster, so they are slightly less powerful when attempting to play a prolonged game and work your way through multiple heavies. I like these guys with haley a lot. I think the forgeguard, though less forgiving perform the roll of “killing heavies that I have already tied up” better, and I wanted to run ragman to increase the damage output of centurion, which helped push me towards forgeguard.

Anastasia Di Bray – Espionage wins you the game if you get it off. +1 to go first CAN win you a game, I think going first was a major contributing factor to my wins in both round 5 and 6. Though I did win both of those rolls naturally. Arlan Strangeways fights for this slot. I think with the 2012 steamroller changes, going first is only a major advantage in some scenarios. So it’s certainly possible that Arlan is better in this slot. I honestly can’t say for sure. the threat of espionage is powerful, but she doesn’t have as obvious or direct of an impact as power booster and repair.

Gorman Di Wulfe – it’s gorman, he needs no explanation.

Ragman – honestly it’s 2 points for Kiss that can’t miss. Boneshaker is no slouch either, he just needs a good place to hang out, and units he can keep up with, Centurion and Forgeguard are the perfect pairings for this little fellow.

Journeyman Warcaster – much like gorman, little Kara did well for me she’s just a boss.

Rhupert Carvolo – Fearless and pathfinder, and both really important in this list. Haley’s command isn’t her strongest attribute and I don’t have any banners hanging around. Models will die, I really can’t afford to lose a unit’s full turn to failing one cmd check. Also pathfinder is just always useful.

Squire. He’s good.

Reinforcements – Stormclad. Basically this is the model I really wish I could fit in, and Haley’s control area is large enough that it’s pretty easier for her to pick this guy up as part of the army after his initial turn.

Lt Caine.
I started with haley, and I felt she had a good handle on take and hold scenarios. So I had to play for more open scenarios that force me to spread my troops out a great deal more. Or something that can simply overwhelm my Haley list with powerful fighty infantry. for this I chose a caster with an excellent ranged game. Nobody supports guns better than Lt Caine, Nobody. Who kills hordes of infantry better than Caine? NOBODY.

Warmachine and Hordes are going to be at every tournament, and you should consider which caster is going to be more likely fielded against each “game”, Caine is more likely to see the field against warmachine, because they bring more infantry, usually. For this reason I chose to put A&H (magic weapons) and Eiryss (disruption) in Caine.

Rowdy – Runs for free, blows people out with counter charge, and uses up my warjack points. Perfect.
Wishnailer – You want to upkeep snipe or blur or both every turn, he always gives you a focus. Arcane Secrets and +2”s of range means you can thunderstrike from 15”s away boosting both rolls, for some serious smiting. He does what needs to be done, squire isn’t very far behind though, if you want to save some cash.

Arcane tempest gun mages – basically what I said above, AND rune shot on these two AMAZING ….

Hunters – They shoot cav, they shoot heavies, they shoot objectives. All with RAT 7 and range 18? It’s really close for me, between the 2 hunters and Longgunners+2 points, but hunters a little better against heavier targets, and I value mobility a lot. Which they grant me.

Black 13th – Flare, and sniped magestorm are super scary. Mostly flar though, I was really worried about things like Kaya2

Nyss hunters. Range 12, highly mobile, hard to engage, high defense. PATHFINDER AN HUNTER I was really afraid of heavy forest boards, and I wanted the hunter. These could easily have been long gunners as well, but once again I trade raw gun power for speed and utility. It’s really preference.

Lady Aiyana & master holt – pow 12’s are better than pow 10’s, A LOT better

Eiryss, Angel of Retribution – This list isn’t great at dealing with high-armor stuff, so I really neded to be able to drop armor buffs off of units, and disrupting ‘Jacks can play a major role. As this list was geared more towards warmachine armies, I felt it was the better list to put eiryss in.

Journeyman Warcaster – Arcane Shield is good, you should be bringing this guy in almost every list. +3 armor on gunmages/nyss against AoEs is incredibly powerful.

Reinholdt – Lucky charm and reload. i’m pretty sure he got bloody famous just for following Caine around with some “lucky” gun clips.

Reinforcements – Precurser Knights + UA.
I wanted something that could come in, and threaten a zone effectively. Stormclad is the easy choice, but Caine isn’t likely going to be able to pick up Stormclad to give him focus after he comes on, so I went with the most independant unit ever. Precursers. it was fine, I’m sure there is better, but I didn’t test flank scenario’s enough with the Lt. Since Haley is generally superior in them. They came in once at Mayhem, and did fine, not sure what I would replace them with. maybe long-gunners, or Nyss if I put longgunners in their place in the main list.

Since I started writing this, and got distracted by diablo 3. Stormwall has been spoiled so I’m going to touch on how I would alter these lists to fit the stormwall in. This is completely theorycraft, and I’m not sure if it’s better or worse, but if you want to try it out and comment below, I’m interested in reading your findings 😀

-10 nyss hunters
-Ol’ Rowdy
+Stormwall (better target for snipe, still has pathfinder, and deals with heavy stuff better) this version relies more on caine’s feat to do the work, but thats ok, right? This list is FAR better against heavies than the previous one, and depending on the meta shift from Colossals we might be seeing less infantry, which makes the stormwall vastly superior to rowdy+nyss.

In this case, switch the reinforcements to Nyss hunters.
