Hello I’m carnage4u and I’m addicted to all things Warmachine. I’ve been playing the game since 2005. I’ve played minature wargames for over 20 years. I live in Madison WI and am lucky enough to have a huge warmachine player base. I will be writing some articles on a variety of topics, but I’m hoping to post a few times a month on my current terrain projects. While I love playing my Skorne, Cryx, Minions and Cygnar I equally enjoy painting up my army and working on terrain. It’s important to me, that our local game stores and events have a good varieity of quality terrain. It makes games more interesting. Good looking terrain pieces are great. I have put a lot of time into making terrain that looks good on the table. But it’s also critically important to me that terrain pieces are made to be “playable”. I cannot tell you how many times I have gone to an event, and either terrain is in bad shape, or the pieces are so ackward that even if they do look nice, they are so frustating they hurt play experience. For example. I made the following terrain for our local game stores earlier this year: The hills in this picture do not have “curved” slopes. I agree curved sloped hills look better. But I have almost never seen any hill with a curved slope that wasnt a pain in the butt when it came to balancing models and placing them on the hill edges. The trees can all be picked up and moved off the forest tempaltes as well. I also like to add in some terrain that isn’t used as much. Rough terrain patchs are fun. I made some rough terrain patches, and even a hill with rough terrain. My big project, which I started a few months ago, is slowly picking up steam. I’m building a modular Ruined City Board. Each 1ft x 1ft section is able to be rotated to create many variant boards. Here is a sneak peak of some of my test pieces. I will have more of this in upcoming weeks. These are all made with Hirst arts molds, and I need to make more blocks out of the molds stage which takes a few weeks to complete. Carnage4u...read more
by Jake VanMeter Hey all!! Jake (Neutralyze) here. I’m just popping in right quick to give you a rundown of where I think our warlocks rank based on a tier. This is obviously my opinion so take it for what it’s worth A – Saeryn. She honestly has very few matchups where she feels on edge. Her denial feat topped with a denial spell list and the auto hitting 5” AOE means she can handle a lot on the field. To top it off she has defense 18 vs. ranged attacks with force barrier which makes her pretty survivable on the feat turn when she might be out in the open to keep her beasts in control. B. pVayl, eLylyth, Bethayne – Now don’t get me wrong here folks. I really like pVayl. She is my favorite warlock to play. You have to admit though that she has worse matchups than Saeryn has. eLylyth is here because she does have certain matchups similar to Bethayne where her offenses are largely shut down. All the warlocks here are tourney competitive and have options available to them that makes them a viable threat on the field. C. Absylonia, Kallus, eVayl, eThags, pTthags – “eThags is a C!?” You ask? What am I thinking? Grab your blanket and hear me out. It will be ok. I promise. eThags is a great late game beater. His problem is that his best lists are built towards Shredder spam. If you don’t run Shredder spam he feels awkward, and the lower model count can be a problem. Do you run infantry for ranged support and a screen do nothing much to help them? Do you try to go for the popular pop’n’drop with a Spell Martyr? Everything eThags does is a telegraphed move. He emphasizes offensive like no other; but doesn’t have a response for when his offense comes up short. To keep it simple, if his army doesn’t hit hard first then his game disappears faster than a Hershey’s bar at a fat camp. D. pLylyth – She’s our battle box warlock and needs a shout out. we all have played with her when we first started. Sadly, once we realized what there was outside of the battle box she quickly got sidelined. Her low fury stat combined with her fury hogging spells and small control area really hinder her in a competitive environment. I’m not saying she’s horrible. We all have gotten feat kills with Seraphs, Typhon, etc but she just doesn’t have the tools to stand on top with the big boys. E. Rhyas – Oh boy. I often reflect on how she was in MKI and wonder what was so bonkers that she had to be changed this much. She has a cool buff spell for a beast and a stealth spell but that limits her to 3 fury on an average turn. She wants to be an assassin warlock but often relies on a crit to get the job done. Anyone can tell you that relying on crits will ruin your day unless you can roll upwards of 4 + dice. With her lack of fury or decent abilities to go against top level warcasters and warlocks, at best you’ll catch an opponent or two...read more
by Chuck Elswick Hi all, My name is Chuck Elswick, or Bulldog to some. I am 29 years old. I have been playing the game since it first came out. I play every faction in the game I have won major convention events as well as local events. I am part of the Detroit group that travels to all of the conventions, also known as the 4 Horsemen. To be honest no one in our group actually lives in Detroit, but no one has heard of Dearborn Heights, Farmington, Troy, or my city of Brownstown. Our group does not even play in Detroit, we play in Livonia at RIW Hobbies. I am also our area’s Press Ganger. I got into Press Ganging for the same reason I agreed to write these articles; I enjoy helping the player community grow as well as helping players become better at the game. I am the player in the Detroit group, and you might have seen on the forums, that plays the stuff that is unpopular or not widely used and I make it work. I will be writing articles to help you, as the player, dust off those models you bought because you loved the story behind them or loved the model itself and just haven’t gotten around to playing it much because it did not fit into the game the way you thought it would. I will also be giving you some beginner tips to help those just starting to become better. So that they may see what an awesome game, and what a fun way to spend time with friends Warmachine is. I will be focusing upon a different faction and warcaster/warlock each article and with so many out there I will need your help. I play every faction and warcaster/warlock so I would like your help in picking what I focus on in each upcoming article. So send me suggestions. These suggestions can be any type of model/unit in the game and I promise to try and get to everyone’s request. I look forward to hearing from you all. Just click on the CONTACT MOM link above and send me your...read more
