What’s up, guys!? It’s Trevy the Great here again from Way of the Swan to dojo some awesome uses for everyone’s new best friend… Gastone Crosse!
Obviously the best Galleon ‘caster is Bart. Seriously, look at that guy’s card; I haven’t recently but if I remember correctly there’s a rule on there somewhere that says that you have to take a Galleon with him. With the release of the rules for the new Kickstarter minis from Warmachine: Tactics, I’ve been wracking my brains to dojo ways to use all of them.. not necessarily at the same time, of course, but I won’t rule that out. Crazy lists from eHaley to Darius have been running through my head and I’m very excited for all Cygnar’s new toys. We certainly didn’t get the short end of the stick when it comes to these spoilers!
So, I was thinking about running Gastone with his best buddy Gilbert the Galleon in various lists when it hit me… Siege may be the best thing for the Galleon since Bart. Maybe. The first thing that comes to mind with Gastone and his big, metal, vaguely aquatic friend is how dangerous a place the world is for poor Gastone as he’s a support solo worth 21 points. Fortunately, Siege supports support really well and making Gastone DEF 18 and immune to blast damage is a start. Between Foxhole, Dodge and his ability to play really far back between his respectable 8″ CNTRL and access to Fire Group, Gastone can be pretty safe with Siege.
But simply keeping Gastone relatively safe is all well and good; a lot of Cygnar ‘casters can do that, but what exactly does Siege do for the Galleon itself? Allow me to make a list; I love lists:
- Under Breach, the Galleon’s gun port AoE’s become POW 7 Armor Piercing; this equals a lot of dead high ARM infantry, something cygnar often has a lot of trouble with. Bane knights, IFP, you name it, all get blown up by the Galleon’s guns.
- Under Breach, the Galleon’s harpoon will just about never fail to damage the heavy that it’s shooting at, considering most of the time it will be dealing damage at dice +5.
- Considering that the Galleon is really 20 points even and comes with Dougal Macnaille bolted to the top, it’s good to get the best use out of Artillerist… such as making Artillerist affect the harpoon gun with Explosivo.
On top of that, just being in the faction of Cygnar means that the Galleon is an automatic consideration for an Arc Shield target, giving it a very respectable ARM 22. Additionally, the Galleon offers Siege a late-game melee punch and a way to actually finish off damaged heavies that I find he sometimes lacks; the Feat is all well and good but sometimes you just need a good ‘ol trident to put the fear of Morrow into you enemies.
With all this in mind, I set about constructing a list:
Major Markus ‘Siege’ Brisbane (*5pts)
* Defender (9pts)
* Squire (2pts)
Black 13th Gun Mage Strike Team (4pts)
Lady Aiyana & Master Holt (4pts)
Gastone Crosse (3pts)
* Galleon (18pts)
Eiryss, Angel of Retribution (3pts)
Journeyman Warcaster (3pts)
* Hunter (6pts)
Master Gunner Dougal MacNaile (2pts)
Reinholdt, Gobber Speculator (1pts)
Having not played this list yet so I’m not sure how it will perform but I’m pretty happy with it. There are no rangers in it considering the main attraction is not affected by them and I’m not overjoyed by the lack of Gun Mages, but the amount of anti-stealth tech between the B13, Siege himself and a bunch of deviating, Artillerist’d AoEs makes their presence unnecessary. I’m probably going to proxy the list a couple of times and try it out, I’m really excited to see how it does and I think it can actually help solve a lot of Cygnar’s tougher matchups, such as the medium-infantry spam that’s become all the rage lately that our measly POW 10s can’t handle.
