Klaw plays Trolls, pt 1

After the WTC, I decided to make the switch. I wanted a Hordes faction, and I wanted to shoot stuff every once in a while. So Trollbloods. Not Legion, Legion is so lame. A nice side effect of playing Trolls is, at least in my limited experience as a Cryx player, that people drop pretty much anything against you. That way, I would get to see aspects of the game I otherwise never see. Like … Cygnar casters that aren’t called Victoria. Or Menoth casters that don’t float. Or Legion casters that aren’t Omens of Everblight. Or … you get the idea. It’s all about the diversity.

I got my paws on some models, borrowed some more from Belgian legend Wout, and started building some lists. The first dude I on my list was Grim Angus, if only for the Belgian connection. I have some previous experience with him, but it has been over two years. Still, as these things go, the first actual game I played since this year’s WTC was with a proxied Runes of War, the build Flanzer took to the 2013 WTC, but more on that later. Some other installment, maybe.

Meanwhile, we had a local tournament coming up. I cooked up a Grim list with the models I had, just to get started on that. I mean, who goes to a tournament without a Cryx drop, right? I played against Christophe from the Otter Team Belgium, who was using an Irusk2 list, something like this:

Supreme Kommandant Irusk (*5pts)
* Juggernaut (7pts)
Alexia Ciannor & the Risen (Alexia and 9 Risen Grunts) (5pts)
* Koldun Kapitan Valachev (2pts)
Great Bears of Gallowswood (5pts)
Iron Fang Pikemen (Leader and 9 Grunts) (8pts)
* Black Dragon Officer & Standard (2pts)
Iron Fang Pikemen (Leader and 9 Grunts) (8pts)
* Black Dragon Officer & Standard (2pts)
Widowmakers (Leader and 3 Grunts) (4pts)
Winter Guard Mortar Crew (Leader and Grunt) (3pts)
Eiryss, Angel of Retribution (3pts)
Iron Fang Kovnik (2pts)
Iron Fang Kovnik (2pts)
Widowmaker Marksman (2pts)

All in all, a very nice list. It has game against many things, and is generally fun to play against. My Grim list has a good battlegroup (Bomber, Impaler and Pyre), three of the right units (Fennblades, Scattergunners and Burrowers), but a bit of a solo bloat that complicated my activations and generally didn’t get much work done. The game goes on its merry way (with me playing 20 min turns and Christophe keeping it nice and crisp), I kill some stuff, he kills more of my stuff. I have great trouble deploying my models, and this blasted flag is getting severely in my way too (it’s Incursion, by the way). Apart from that, I completely forget about the scenario, but Christophe, nice guy as he is, decides not to capitalize too much on that. Finally, it’s getting late (20 min turns will do that), so Christophe decides to go for the assassination. He gets unlucky and misses some shots, and more importantly, his Pikemen miss their CMA too. My turn, I try to get the Pikemen off Grim with my Scattergunners, but fail horribly. The ballsy route it is – three free strikes later, Grim is shoots the Supreme Kommandant down with his snare gun, and the Bomber seals the deal.

After this game, I realize that the weak point of the Grim list is actually Grim himself. Also, I have no idea what I should do with my fury on the first turn, so … enter the Krielstone.

Grim Angus (*6pts)
* Pyre Troll (5pts)
* Troll Impaler (5pts)
* Dire Troll Bomber (10pts)
Krielstone Bearer and 5 Stone Scribes (4pts)
* Krielstone Stone Scribe Elder (1pts)
Pyg Burrowers (Leader and 9 Grunts) (6pts)
Trollkin Fennblades (Leader and 9 Grunts) (8pts)
* Trollkin Fennblade Officer & Drummer (2pts)
Trollkin Scattergunners (Leader and 5 Grunts) (5pts)
* Trollkin Scattergunner Officer & Drummer (2pts)
Fell Caller Hero (3pts)
Gatorman Witch Doctor (3pts)
Stone Scribe Chronicler (2pts)

I tried this list against a local Legion player a few days later, who was using Lylyth2 and three Ravagores. I can be brief on this – a Pyre Troll makes Ravagores cry, a Stone doesn’t help his cause either, and Bombers kill stuff. Not sure what the hell the Witch Doc Croc is doing in the list, but I assume there will be a Lich player somewhere down the road to remind me.

At the tournament, I “used” this list during a bye, devious as I am, so I didn’t play any “real” games with it yet, but for now, I like.

Maybe I’ll turn this into something regular for Muse on Minis. I mean, after the excellent reception of my previous ramblings, what choice do I have. Everything for the fans.
