Chewin the Fat 5

After last weeks schpeel on the various different thoughts roaming around my head I’ve been thinking a fair bit on what Faction I intend to choose. The tournament in Dundee tomorrow appears to have blown up into a pretty big one. Current guess is around 20-25 players which, for Scotland, is pretty big! As a result I think I’m going to have to go with the Faction that’s been faithful to me over the last few months. Cygnar it is! For anyone wanting to see my thoughts on this subject in more detail I will refer you to last weeks article:

http://museonminis.com/chewin-the-fat-4/

(Also, apologies for the lack of shamelessly pilfered pictures this week but I barely had time to write this down at all! I’ll make it up next week with real pictures!)

My issue, now that I’ve chosen Cygnar, is that I must consider my pair of lists carefully as I have not had as much tournament success with them as I ever did with my Cryx or my Legion. I tend to change my lists fairly regularly as Cygnar have so many different options and, as a result, I often end up with some glaring weakness appearing over my two lists. Due to the high number of players and different Factions involved at the upcoming tournament I can’t let this happen again so I’ll be putting a fair bit of thought into this over the available time I have when I should really be working…

Cygnar has a ridiculous number of options. With a huge range of access to Mercenaries and a solid list of very powerful casters to pick from I find it can be really difficult to settle down on any particular list. As mentioned in previous articles, the lists I have had probably the most experience with recently are Haley2 with the full load of Steelheads and Siege with a Stormwall. I mentioned before that I was going to try 2 largely untested casters that I have high hopes for. Unfortunately, I’m starting to waver in this decision and am levitating towards these tried and tested lists in the hopes that my experience with them can cover some bad matchup issues. Even if I don’t go with my regular lists I can say for sure that my Cygnar pairings will always consist of one Reinholdt caster (Siege, Caine2, Kara) and one support caster everyone else but usually a Haley of one form or another).

To start with then, lets take a look at the Reinholdt casters. For Siege, 35pts is a difficult setup as I love using Stormwall but don’t feel that I can get all the supporting infantry that I want. This is especially prevalent in my list:

Major Markus ‘Siege’ Brisbane                         +5

–  Stormwall                                                             19

–  Squire                                                                      2

Storm Strider                                                             9

6 Rangers                                                                   5

Journeyman Warcaster                                          3

Reinholdt, Gobber Speculator                               1

Stormsmith Stormcaller                                          1

Reinforcements:

–  Minuteman                                                              5

Stormsmith Stormcaller                                           1

Stormsmith Stormcaller                                           1

This list has a low model count. Noticeably low. The issue is that I love having Stormwall with Siege. It gives him scenario presence, the firepower of 2 Defenders and, most importantly the lightning pods. I’ve always worried about high defence infantry with Siege but the Storm Strider shooting at pods just incinerates such bad guys quite quickly. Against heavy target saturation this list can fire 4 Pow 15’s and 2 Pow 14’s on Feat turn which can cause some serious damage. On top of this, Siege himself is pretty damn hard to kill. He generally gives 2 to Stormwall and sits on either 3 Focus in a Foxhole or 5 Focus outside (when the Squire gets involved anyway). If necessary I can even stick Arcane Shield on him and let him sit being nigh unkillable. I love this aspect of Siege as I am always afraid for my life with Cygnar casters!

Next up, Caine2. This was discussed a bit in the previous article:

Captain Allister Caine                                         +5

–  Ol’ Rowdy                                                              9

–  Squire                                                                      2

10 Greygore Boomhowlers & Co.                        9

10 Horgenhold Forge Guard                                8

6 Rangers                                                                   5

Reinholdt, Gobber Speculator                              1

Lady Aiyanna & Master Holt                               4

Rhupert Carvolo, Piper of Ord                              2

Reinforcements:

–  Minuteman                                                            5

Harlan Versh                                                            2

There is slight indecision on whether I want to min the unit of Boomhowlers for Junior or not but the list is solid with both attrition and assassination tricks. I think Magic Bullet is a generally underused spell and that Rangers can use it very effectively. The last Reinholdt caster deserves at least a mention and that is Kara Sloan. A fun caster with an amazing gun. Unfortunately, she is not as competitive as Caine2 and with the tournament growing to the size it has I’m definitely feeling the competitive spirit! As a result I won’t theory her too much here. It is interesting to note though that I love the idea of her at 50pts with Stormwall and the full pirate boat.

My Haley2 list is inspired almost exclusively by one of her spells. Deceleration is a solid defensive ranged buff that affects a huge area and can neuter a lot of shooting heavy opponents (at least those that don’t use Mage Hunter Strike Force). Most importantly for me is the fact that it affects all friendly models, not friendly Faction. My mercenary lists really appreciate being harder to kill against range and this combined with Arcane Shield on the Steelhead Heavy Cavalry makes them Def 15 Arm 21 against ranged attacks. This is the centre of the army and the rest of the list is pretty much designed to support it.

Major Victoria Haley                                           +5

–  Lancer                                                                    6

–  Squire                                                                      2

10 Steelhead Halberdiers                                      6

5 Steelhead Heavy Cavalry                                  10

Journeyman Warcaster                                          3

Stannis Brocker                                                        4

Rhupert Carvolo, Piper of Ord                              2

Reinforcements:

–  Minuteman                                                             5

Gorman Di Wulfe                                                     2

Again, 35pts is an issue. At 50pts I can either replace the Lancer with Stormwall and Gorman or just add 20 Forge Guard depending on my preference at the time. At this level though I have to choose between Stormwall with her or the Steelheads which is a sad state of affairs for me. Haley2, however, is too good to have only 1 list here! The good thing about the Stormwall list I have in mind is the sheer hilarity of it:

Major Victoria Haley                                           +5

–  Stormwall                                                             19

–  Squire                                                                      2

10 Horgenhold Forge Guard                                8

10 Horgenhold Forge Guard                                8

Journeyman Warcaster                                         3

Reinforcements:

–  Minuteman                                                           5

Gorman Di Wulfe                                                   2

Simple and effective. Stormwall and Hammer dwarves. It’s undoubtedly not the best list but it is really funny! The other option I like is to take Steelhead Halberdiers and Heavy Cavalry without Stannis and combo this with Stormwall which is interesting but I’m not sure I could survive without Tactician. Interesting ideas I think and all with only one more caster to look at on my shortlist:

Captain Victoria Haley                                       +5

–   Stormwall                                                           19

–   Squire                                                                     2

6 Arcane Tempest Gun Mages                             6

–   Arcane Tempest Gun Mage Officer                2

6 Rangers                                                                   5

Black 13th                                                                   4

Ragman                                                                      2

Reinforcements:

–  Minuteman                                                             5

Gorman Di Wulfe                                                     2

This is a gun line, no more and no less. I firmly believe that Haley2’s Stormwall is better than Haley1’s despite what some people believe but I also firmly believe that Temporal Barrier is the second best spell in the game (after Purification) and is much more irritating than even Haley2’s Feat. The catch here is that I’m always wary of using Haley1 in general as people tend not to enjoy playing against her and you can tilt people the wrong way if you’re not careful. A risky choice at the best of times.

So, after all this is said and done, I’m not sure what combination of the above I will take. That is, if I take a combination of the above at all. The tournament is tomorrow so I have to hope that people don’t steal all of my tech beforehand and net deck me but luckily I’m just not important enough for that to be an issue! Apologies for this being somewhat of a rush article, as I mentioned I’ve been very busy at work, but next week you should get an array of battle reports describing how the tournament went and it is my firm hope that I will remember to take pictures for you all to actually see what I’m talking about!

Hope you found the above interesting and, as always, if you have any questions then don’t hesitate to ask.

Until next time,

Hi there, PurchasedPig here, based in bonnie Scotland in the UK. I'm a relatively recent convert to Warmachine/Hordes from the GW systems (been playing for about a year and a half). I played 40k from aged 11 and sort of kept going with Wargaming from there... I have a severe case of Faction ADD and collect more factions than not. As a result I feel like I have a lot of information to extol! Hopefully any ramblings are appreciated, give me a shout if you want to know anything else!
